Guests from the European Union commission for “Assessment of Existing Legislation on the Regulation of the Higher Education System of Azerbaijan” visited Khazar University as the second workshop in a series of seminars organized by the Ministry of Education of the Azerbaijan Republic. The first meeting had been held at the Ministry of Education on January 31st. The guests, including Karl Holm representing the Finnish Higher Education Evaluation Council and Jan de Groof of the European Education and Law Association, met with Khazar University President Dr. John Ryder and then with the founder and chairman of the Board of Directors and Trustees of the university, Prof. Hamlet Isaxanli.
Then a meeting was held at the university involving the guests; Agil Veliyev, representative of Ministry of Education in charge of TEMPUS program coordination; Akif Guliyev, music historian from the Conservatory of Music; and the following university staff and faculty members: Prof. Hamlet Isaxanli; Dr. John Ryder, vice presidents Mahammad Nuriyev, Rafig Ahmadov, and Farda Asadov; Eldar Shahgaldiyev, Associate Vice President for Graduate Students & Research; Alovsat Amirbeyli, Director of Public Relations and Media; Siyavush Azakov, Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences; Calvin Theissen, Chair of the Department of English Language and Literature; Richard Rousseau, Chair of the Department of Political Science and International Relations; Khumar Mammadova, PhD student of the School of Economics and Management; and Martha Lawry, MA student of the School of Education.
At the meeting, Hamlet Isaxanli made an opening speech highlighting the history of Khazar University and obstacles it has faced because of legislation. Then issues of legislation regarding higher education were discussed in detail by all the participants.
